Exclusive Video Interview: Director Aitch Alberto, Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe

Aitch AlbertoAitch Alberto has been on a mission. When she read Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, she knew immediately that she wanted to tell the story onscreen. Nine years later, she is celebrating the release of her new movie in theaters.

Based on the beloved YA novel by Benjamin Alire Sáenz, Alberto’s film is a beautiful, sensitive story of two teenagers coming of age in Texas in the 1980s. Quiet, resentful Aristotle (Max Pelayo) and free-spirited Dante (Reese Gonzalez) couldn’t be more different, but they quickly become best friends. With Dante’s influence, Ari begins a journey of self-discovery and discovers secrets he didn’t even know he was keeping. In addition to Pelayo and Reese, the film features a powerhouse supporting cast that includes Eugenio Derbez, Eva Longoria, Veronica Falcón and Kevin Alejandro.

What was it about this story that inspired Alberto to write and direct the film? As a trans Latina woman, she felt both passion and responsibility.

“The book had a gentleness and a lyricism that we don't often see when it comes to these stories,” she told SciFi Vision.  “I was really impassioned, and it felt really urgent for me to be the person that brings these characters to life, because I think it's necessary for my community to have an option that we haven't seen before.

Exclusive: Michael Jacobs on Directing the Star-Studded Maybe I Do

Maybe I DoMichael Jacobs has been an icon on TV and in movies for years. He has directed many television shows and movies, including Boy Meets World and The Torkelsons, bringing many generations fond childhood memories.

Now he is back and better than ever with a brand-new movie called Maybe I Do, starring William H. Macy, Susan Sarandon, and Diane Keaton. It is a twist on the typical romantic comedy and has been something that has been years in the making. He began working on it as a play and eventually decided to make it into a movie.

“It’s been gestating a long time, because it ran as a play,” Jacobs told SciFi Vision. “I had started writing this idea when I was about nineteen years old. I think I was in a relationship, and I had said, ‘I love you,’ and they said, ‘How do you just say that?’ It seems so simple for ‘I love you’ to come out of your mouth when you're a kid, and you don't know what you're talking about. I sat down, and I started to write this. It was a relationship comedy that was based on this young woman who thought that the relationship was farther down the road and was surprised to find out that her partner was reticent and then finds out that the reticence comes from the fact that we are offshoots of our upbringing. I wrote the idea, and it ran on Broadway.”

Exclusive Video Interview: The Computer Accent: Featuring Grammy-Nominated Band Yacht on Creating Their Album with Artificial Intelligence

YachtThe new documentary from filmmakers Sebastian Pardo and Riel Roch-Decter, The Computer Accent, follows the journey of the innovative and boundary-pushing band YACHT, as they attempt something unique: handing over creative control of their album to artificial intelligence. Working with researchers in the field, the group uses cutting edge machine-learning to create a one of a kind collaboration between humans and machine in all aspects of the creative process, including music, lyrics, artwork, videos, and more.

Recently, SciFi Vision talked to the musicians of the Grammy-nominated dance-pop band about their ground-breaking journey creating their album Chain Tripping. The spark of the idea first came from band member Jona Bechtolt. “I've always been interested in interrogating new technologies and trying to break them and trying to misuse them to expose what's hidden from us,” he explained. “…This was the newest tool available, and it seemed like it was going to be important for the future. I wanted to know more about it, and I wanted us to learn about it through making things with it.”

“If we want to understand something, really, the best way to do it for us is just to try to figure out how to make something with it,” added vocalist Claire L. Evans, “because then we're going to come up against all those challenges and have to solve all the problems and get a deeper understanding of the thing.”

Although it was something new, they weren’t worried, said Robert “Bobby Birdman” Kieswetter. “I think we’ve worked together enough on enough projects to know that…we're probably going to be able to be happy with [the album] just based on our working relationships and our history and past results…I don't think there was a concern that we wouldn't end up with something interesting at the end of it.”
